One thing we have been focusing on a lot lately when we train athletes is how are they using their arms when they run. Over the past 2 years I have seen a lot of crazy running forms and for those of you who say you can’t teach speed…well you’re wrong. It is true that some people are born faster than others due to their genetic muscular makeup. However, with correct form, discipline and hard work you can improve your speed. This week we are going to start with the upper body.
First off have your hands loose and pretend that you have something delicate like a potato chip in your fingers. Bend your arms at the elbow so they will now be at a 90 degree angle. Next, make sure to pump your arms at the shoulder joint, not at the elbows. You want to pump the arms back hard and then let them come forward easy. As far as the distance your arms travel, have your hands go from cheek (side of your face) to cheek (side of your butt).
A great drill to start off with is to sit down on the ground with your legs straight out. Pump your arms slowly then gradually increase the speed. Before you know it you will be going Mach 1 and have a tough time keeping your butt on the ground. Doing these simple steps is a great start to getting faster.
