Over the past year or so I have had a lot of coaches tell me that their kids love to scrimmage, but they only have 12 players. Typically they have the assistant coaches fill in and they are usually dad’s who are one divot in right field away from tearing their knee to shreads. There is a better way and it’s very simple.
First split your 12 players into 3 teams of 4. Then you want to decide which team will hit first. Once that is done take one team and put them in the infield, and put the next team in the outfield and behind home plate as the catcher. If you prefer you can have one of players on the third team (the one in the outfield) be the pitcher and have a coach off to the side and be the catcher.
Each team gets three outs on offense and then they rotate from hitting to infield, infield to outfield and outfield to hitting. Keep score for all 3 teams to keep it competitive and depending on how much time you have you should be able to get a few innings in.
